The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. The House on Mango Street is a fictional story about a girl named Esperanza. Esperanza is a young Hispanic girl who grows up in a poor neighborhood. The story talks about the struggles that Esperanza goes through as she tries to make it out of her neighborhood. (Mango Street) In the end Esperanza makes it out and comes back to help other young women.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian is a story about a young Native American boy named Junior. Junior lives on an indian reservation, everyone on the indian reservation is poor and doesn't have a future. Junior transfers to a white school outside of his reservation. Junior does this because he wants to have a brighter future and not be stuck on the reservation.
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. The Art of Racing in the Rain is a story about a dog named Enzo. The book tells the story of the classic American family. A young husband and wife with a baby girl and a dog. The cool part about this book is that it is told in Enzo's point of view. I think its cool because you get an idea of how a dog thinks.
